Cowichan Intercultural Society’s Childminding Program, offering childminding for eligible newcomer children, ensures that parents can access our other programs & services, secure in the knowledge that their children are on-site, safe & engaged.

This position involves supporting the activities of the childminding centre, including work with parents, other staff and direct care of the children. We will be pursuing licensing to provide full childcare. At that point, this role and the weekly hours will expand.

The candidate must have, or be currently working towards, their Early Childhood Educator certificate.

The ideal candidate will also have:

  •  Valid CPR & First Aid Certificate;
  •  A proven understanding of intercultural and inclusive community;
  •  Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communications;
  •  Demonstrated success in relationship building;
  •  Outstanding organizational skills;
  •  Computer literacy;
  •  Ability to share our vision and mission, and engage others in support of Cowichan Intercultural Society.

This position will start as a part-time role, with hours ranging between 10-15 hours per week, based on required times for childminding. The pay range starts at $17.50 – $19.00 per hour and is a staff position.

NB: This position requires the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, and sufficient mobility to engage in floor-based play.

Job Description – Early Childhood Educator (ECE)

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Childminding/Childcare Program – Estimated time 90%

  • Assist with intake for childcare program
  • Arrange/acquire class space and materials, as required
  • Work closely with other staff to ensure continuity of care for families
  • Advise families of cancellations (ex. snow closures), in accordance with CIS policies
  • Manage conflict or situations of a sensitive nature, in consultation with relevant staff/executive director as required
  • Plan and implement activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of the children in the program
  • Develop culturally appropriate programming and activities
  • Develop activities that enhance and encourage English language acquisition
  • Ensure equipment and facility are well maintained and safe at all times
  • Promote and represent the childcare program and Cowichan Intercultural Society in the community
  • Ensure provincial & federal legislation and/or funder requirements are consistently met

Reporting and Privacy Management- Estimated time 5%

  • Ensure appropriate data is entered into database
  • Maintain highest standards of privacy and confidentiality (in accordance with PIPA and FOIPA)
  • Complete appropriate reports and evaluations, as required

Other Responsibilities- Estimated time 5%

  • Participate in staff meetings as appropriate
  • Attend Settlement or LINC Team meetings as necessary
  • Other duties as required

Settlement, Integration and Language Team (SILT) Support Worker

The Cowichan Intercultural Society is a Canadian registered charitable organization that has been operating in the Cowichan Valley Region for over 35 years. We are the leading community resource for a variety of settlement services to immigrants, and for education and awareness in developing welcoming and inclusive communities.
Successful settlement and integration into our community is vital for newcomers to reach their full potential in Canada. Our Settlement Team work closely with newcomer individuals and families to ensure they feel welcome, access necessary services, and eventually integrate into the community.
The SILT Support Worker supports the delivery of settlement and integration services to newcomer clients. The incumbent will support the blending of Settlement Services, Community Connections and Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC), as well as provide planning and implementation support for the Home Away From Home, Seniors group and Settlement Gatherings.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • a sensitivity for intercultural and inclusive communities
  • a demonstrated track record of successful program assistance and project management
  • post-secondary education in counselling, social work, psychology or related discipline
  • excellence in verbal, written and interpersonal communications
  • fluency in English
  • fluency in a language other than English
  • a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • ability to work flexible hours
  • experience with non-profit organizations and structure
  • ability to work closely with a team and independently
  • familiarity with MS Office and general computer literacy
  • comfort interacting with databases
  • ability to exercise discretion for client confidentiality
  • ability to share vision and mission and engage others in support of CIS

This is a 15 hour per week position. Salary range is $19-21/hr. Holiday pay accumulates at 4%.

Job Description – SILT Support Worker
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in meeting contract criteria & supporting SILT Team – Estimated time 50%

  • Work with the Settlement Coordinators, Community Connections Coordinators and the Finance Coordinator and LINC Coordinator to meet or exceed targets and budgets, overseeing deliverables for the team
  • Assist in developing communications materials and tools to effectively support the Settlement and Integration program, and the Community Connections program
  • Assist in the integration and cross promotions of Settlement, Language, Integration (Community Connections) and other CIS programs
  • Complete reports in a timely manner, (iCARE and OCMS data entry), including case notes where appropriate
  • Conduct reception/support duties as needed
  • Convene SILT meetings, including preparing agendas and taking minutes
  • Be responsible for circulating the minutes in a timely manner, including highlighting action items for team members
  • Assist in the overall evaluation and monitoring of the program success
  • Coordinate volunteers supporting SILT activities in collaboration with Volunteer CoordinatorDirect Client Service – 40%
  • Provide direct settlement support and guidance to clients, particularly for income assistance support
  • Continue to help develop and expand supports for clients
  • Plan and enhance group sessions as needed; including seniors’ group
  • Assist clients with necessary forms
  • Conduct basic needs assessments and Registration (in-take)
  • Assist clients with transportation needs, including tracking and distributing bus passesOther Responsibilities – 10%
  • File & information management
  • Participate in staff meetings and activities and attend the Annual General Meeting
  • Cover case load of other Settlement staff as needed (ex. holiday coverage)
  • Represent Settlement team as a “Frontline worker” at community tables
