Registration is now open for the Cowichan Intercultural Partnership Summit…Leading Integration, Immigration and Inclusion, being held at the Oceanfront Suites at Cowichan Bay on Thursday, 2nd June, 2016.

 About the Summit

The Cowichan Intercultural Partnership Summit invites you – community organizations, municipal and government services, educators, health care providers, and supporters of diversity and inclusion – to engage in a day of exploring and understanding intercultural fluency, building awareness of resources and resource sharing, and, coming together in our commitment to create a more inclusive and integrated community for newcomers.

The Partnership Summit will encompass these topics:

  • History and current Immigration trends in Canada and the Cowichan Valley.
  • How are we doing on the intercultural fluency dial? What is our capacity to integrate and accept diverse cultures into Cowichan/Canadian culture?
  • What do we value about our community and how do we commit to these values?
  • What services does Cowichan have that supports the integration process for newcomers?
  • How does our community prevent racism and other forms of discrimination? How do we respond effectively when incidents of discrimination happen?

We are excited to present Diversity and Inclusion Strategist Alden E. Habacon as our Keynote Speaker. The morning workshop features:

Newcomers, Neighbourliness and the Inclusion Challenge of the Cowichan Valley:
Like many smaller communities in British Columbia, Cowichan needs newcomers, youth and other untapped pools of human capital to sustain its communities and local economy. However, as cultures clash and the spirit of multiculturalism is tested, the aspiration to be a destination of choice also comes with anticipated and sometimes surprising challenges. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the recent arrival of newcomers from Syria is pushing B.C. communities to “walk the talk” of inclusion with new levels of thoughtfulness and flexibility. This keynote is a reminder of the urgency and the opportunity to getting “good neighbourliness” right, for both Cowichan and beyond. It will introduce a “Diversity Change Curve” and the on-going development of “intercultural fluency” as conceptual tools for building workplaces and neighbourhoods where difference is expected and valued, ultimately contributing to a regenerative and socially sustainable Cowichan Valley.

The Partnership Summit will feature panel discussions and round table topics; there will be 12 themes to choose from, each being an important factor in Cowichan’s ability to respond to the needs of immigrants as they go through the sometimes challenging integration process.

Reserve your seats NOW! The cost is $50 which entitles you to up to 3 seats for members of your organization (staff, volunteers, Board, management) to attend. Email partnerships@cis-iwc.org with the names of your participants and any dietary preferences or sensitivities.
