Immigrants and refugees need information and support to help settle as well as adjust to life in Canada. We know which questions you need to ask and we have the resources to get you started on the path to integration.
Our main focus this year in Settlement Services revolved around the arrival of Syrian refugees. Starting in April of 2016, and continuing for the duration of the reporting period, the Cowichan Valley was privileged to welcome 14 Syrian families (74 individuals) into our community. We worked closely with private sponsorship groups to help settle sponsored families and took on sole responsibility for settling those who were assisted by the government. This included finding doctors and dentists, getting the children registered and settled in school, arranging transportation for various appointments, setting up banking, registering for government programs and finding employment. All are now doing well and are tremendous assets to our community.
We would like to express our appreciation to the private sponsorship groups, to our amazing Arabic interpreters Jihan Lossing, Mona Mustafa, Omar Besher, and Omar Fares and to the entire Cowichan community for being so generous and welcoming.
